Unlike in the case of the western countries, in Romania, freemasonry has remained quite discreet and because of this many people do not realize the major role that Romanian freemasonry has had in the formation of the Romanian modern state and how much we owe to this institution.

With all that Freemasonry has entered relatively recently in our country, more exactly starting with the eighteenth century, in its rows were outstanding personalities of the Romanian nation, among which we can recon  princes or rulers as they were: Constantin Mavrocordat, Alexandru Ioan Cuza or Scarlat Ghica; clergy among which were the Bishop of Husi, Leon Gheuca, which endeed up metropolitan of the Moldovan Republic, the bishop of Hotin Amfilochie and bishop Ungro-Vlahiei Dionisie Lupu, or personalities of the cultural and political life: I.C. Bratianu, AC Adapter Rosetti, M. Mihail Kogalniceanu, V. Alecsandri, Nicolae Balcescu, Titu Maiorescu and Dimitrie Bolintineanu and many others. These figures and their ideas who were on the same page with the principles of Freemasonry and we owe them the introduction of the Civil Code, the creation of the Red Cross, School of Arts and Crafts, the development of education and the liberationof the peasants. The Romanian people is Christian and just because of this the ideals of Freemasonry were implemented successfully in practice here, taking into account the fact that the origins of Freemasonry are of a Christian nature.

We should remember the importance of membership of Alexandru Vaida Voevod in a french lodge, namely Ernst Renan, starting with 1919. He was  acceded to the masonry when he visited  France in 1919, on the occasion of the Conference of Peace held Paris. Vaida Voevod claimed that he entered into the lodge to obtaining an advantage for our country at this conference, that he has participated, only a few months in the work of the French lodge and that it hasn`t been part of any lodge in Romanian. However, there are official documents attesting to the contrary, demonstrating the fact that he was not a simple member of the  French lodge and that it continued his activity as a member in Romania, most probably extending up to the highest levels. His statements must be analyzed in that complicated context, in which case Romania has just allied with Germany against the Soviet Union, in 1941. That would explain the harsh statements made by the cutting edges of the blade against Freemasonry “jidovite” and “that thei live in brotherhood of  sign of the cross with Moscow and with the great international capitalism”. The fact is that its connections with european freemasonry and world wide freemasonry have helped carrying out of the Great Union on 1 December 1918.
